The principle of operation of PAC is as follows: Aluminum ions destabilize suspended substances, organic substances, and heavy metals and promote the formation of these compounds together and form a floc. These flocs are very stable precipitates that settle quickly and are easily filtered.

Production of PAC sedimentation aids:
Liquid PAC is prepared by combining aluminum hydroxide with hydrochloric acid HCL and sulfuric acid at high temperature. Then treat the resulting product with calcium carbonate to enhance its basicity. The mixture is then mixed through a centrifuge to separate the liquid polyaluminium chloride from the solid product. Powdered polyaluminium chloride is produced from the reaction of hot HCl gas with aluminum powder to produce powdered PAC.
